You Don’t Feel Like the Same Person Anymore
Living with concussion symptoms can be an incredibly isolating and frustrating experience. You might not feel like the person you used to be, or you might long to return to your former self but find that your symptoms hold you back.
One of the hardest parts of dealing with a concussion is that your symptoms are often invisible to others. You might undergo CT or MRI scans, only to have them come back normal, leaving you with symptoms that only you can feel. This can be incredibly disheartening, as it can feel like no one understands what you’re going through or can validate your experience.
After some time, I was finally diagnosed with a concussion by a doctor who truly understood my symptoms. While receiving a diagnosis brought some clarity, it also brought my life to a screeching halt. I had to pause everything – my job, my social life, and my daily activities. Accepting this reality was one of the hardest things I've ever done.
In the beginning, people are supportive. They understand that you need rest and reach out to see how you’re doing. But as time goes on and your symptoms persist, it becomes harder for outsiders to grasp the reality of your condition, especially because you don’t look sick.
Concussion recovery can be a dark and lonely place, and it’s easy to lose hope. But it’s crucial to remember that giving up is not an option, even if people or doctors tell you that you have to live with it. There is always help out there, and there is always a solution.
