Concussion Symptoms You Should NEVER Ignore
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury, but that doesn’t mean all symptoms are mild. While most concussions resolve with proper care, some symptoms can signal more serious complications and should never be ignored. At Concussion Care, we want you to recognise these warning signs so you can take action before it’s too late.
When to Seek Urgent Medical Care
If you or a loved one experience any of the following after a concussion, seek immediate medical attention:
1️⃣ Worsening Headaches
A headache that won’t go away—or gets worse over time—could indicate brain swelling or bleeding. If pain intensifies rather than improves, don’t ignore it.
2️⃣ Persistent Vomiting or Nausea
Feeling sick once or twice after a concussion is common, but repeated vomiting could mean increased pressure on the brain. Seek urgent medical care if this happens.
3️⃣ Difficulty Walking or Speaking
If you notice slurred speech, loss of coordination, or trouble walking, it could signal serious neurological damage. These are red flags that require immediate evaluation.
4️⃣ Sudden Mood Changes or Personality Shifts
Irritability, extreme confusion, or acting out of character after a concussion can be signs of serious brain dysfunction. If mood swings are severe or worsening, get checked by a doctor.
5️⃣ Blurred Vision or Unequal Pupil Size
Vision problems—especially blurred vision, double vision, or pupils that are unequal in size—can indicate pressure on the brain and need urgent attention.
6️⃣ Loss of Consciousness (Even Briefly)
Losing consciousness, even for a few seconds, means the brain has been seriously affected. If someone faints or blacks out, even momentarily, they should be assessed immediately.
7️⃣ Seizures
If a person who suffered a concussion experiences a seizure, it’s a medical emergency. Call 111 (NZ emergency number) and get help immediately.
What to Do If Symptoms Worsen
1️⃣ Stop all activity – Avoid screens, bright lights, and any form of exertion.
2️⃣ Monitor symptoms closely – Keep track of changes in behaviour, mood, and coordination.
3️⃣ Seek professional care – If symptoms worsen or persist beyond two weeks, consult a specialist at Concussion Care.
4️⃣ Consider Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – HBOT has been shown to support faster healing and better recovery for lingering concussion symptoms.
